3 Types of Misplaced Modifiers
3 Types of Misplaced Modifiers 3 Types of Misplaced Modifiers 3 Types of Misplaced Modifiers By Mark Nichol Poor placement within sentences of words that provide details can hamper comprehension. Take care to avoid the various types of pitfalls demonstrated in the following examples, which are followed by discussion and a revision. 1. The company has been an extremely integral partner for our organization over the past years, both from delivery and leadership perspectives. Because the conjunction both precedes the preposition from, the construction assumes that a complementary preposition will precede ââ¬Å"leadership perspectivesâ⬠in order to fully parallel the phrase ââ¬Å"from delivery,â⬠but placing from before both allows it to serve as the preposition for delivery and ââ¬Å"leadership perspectivesâ⬠alike: ââ¬Å"The company has been an extremely integral partner for our organization over the past years, from both delivery and leadership perspectives.â⬠2. The photographs evoke a time when samurai swordsmen and silk traders found refuge from a bloody uprising against Japanââ¬â¢s shogun in Californiaââ¬â¢s Gold Country. This sentence erroneously suggests that the bloody uprising occurred in Californiaââ¬â¢s Gold Country. Relocating the geographical information so that it immediately follows the key word refuge resolves the issue: ââ¬Å"The photographs evoke a time when samurai swordsmen and silk traders found refuge in Californiaââ¬â¢s Gold Country from a bloody uprising against Japanââ¬â¢s shogun.â⬠3. From time immemorial, writers have drawn on these syndromes to tell stories, from Lewis Carroll to Philip K. Dick. In this case, an adjectival clause, a parenthetical phrase that provides more information about a noun, has been relegated to the end of the sentence, appearing to nonsensically modify stories, instead of being immediately adjacent to the pertinent noun (here, writers): ââ¬Å"From time immemorial, writers from Lewis Carroll to Philip K. Dick have drawn on these syndromes to tell stories.â⬠Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Get a subscription and start receiving our writing tips and exercises daily! Keep learning! Surprising or Not Surprising
Surprising or Not Surprising Surprising or Not Surprising Surprising or Not Surprising By Maeve Maddox Ive become aware of the inexplicable use of the phrase not unsurprising in contexts in which a simple unsurprising is called for. For example: Unpresidential, But Not Unsurprising Its extremely unfortunate yet not unsurprising that such an attack occurred. Annoying but not unsurprising. In each of these examples, the sense is that something might have been expected and is therefore not surprising. Placing not in front of unsurprising garbles the meaning. Something is either surprising or not surprising. surprising: adj. Causing surprise or wonder by its unexpectedness The word unsurprising may be used instead of the phrase not surprising. The OED doesnt bother to define unsurprising as not causing surprise, but it gives this illustration of its use: Adaptations of Dickenss works..are meant to make you feel good. This is unsurprising, as..it could be argued that this is exactly how Dickens intends you to feel. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Interpretations of Tsuru no Sugomori Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Interpretations of Tsuru no Sugomori - Essay Example Upon my first two listens of the Japanese song Tsuru no sugomori (Nesting Crane), I found the song to be slightly therapeutic, while at the same time a bit irritating. I could make out the sound of a flute, and a stringed instrument. The flute at times seemed subtle then grew to be slightly annoying, as it raised in pitch. The stringed instrument tended to maintain a subtle pitch throughout the song, but it would occasionally increase in frequency. Being I can only judge from a western perspective, the song as a whole initially reminded me of what little I know about Eastern culture. I have a very extensive history listening to music. Iââ¬â¢m a fan of multiple contemporary genres, such as Indie, Hip-Hop, Jazz (New wave down tempo and classic), classic rock etcâ⬠¦ I even played in a high school orchestra, in which I gained an understanding of multiple instruments. This experience has enhanced my appreciation of music. This must be taken into consideration when assessing my eval uation of the music. My initial reaction to the piece was one that embodies what I know of ancient Japanese or samurai culture. It specifically reminded me of the 1969 Japanese film Double Suicide in which the two main characters commit the sacred act of Shinju (double suicide) to profess their love to one another.

The Goal Effects of New Tools on the Operation Management Practices Research Paper
The Goal Effects of New Tools on the Operation Management Practices - Research Paper Example Alex is given a time constraint of three months in which he has to save his plant from collapsing. In the course of saving that plant, Alex meets an old colleague named Jonah (a physicist). Jonah helps Alex save the plant by guiding him to the right path (Goldratt & Cox, 1992). The concept applied in The Goal was from the new practices applied in todayââ¬â¢s world. There was a theory named the six-sigma theory which focused on the concept of continuously improving the quality of production and eliminating the waste products just like the lean production concept. Both the concepts were merged and applied in the book (Jacob, Bergland, & Jeff, 2010). However, in the recent years new tools and practices have been introduced based on the use of the Internet as web based business applications. E-commerce is also known as buying and selling of goods or services through the Internet technology. This new trend has increasingly gained popularity, thus changing dynamics of businesses by providing high satisfaction (Gunasekaran, Marri, McGaughey, & Nebhwani, 2002). Now businesses interact by making transactions around the globe in minutes, reducing their operational costs and eventually leading to generation of high revenues. Presently, the orders placed are high in volume as the market is demand driven and the orders are placed more on the basis of Customization category using just-in-time (JIT) rather than batch process system. The business to business (B2B) transactions are gradually changing as the trend is shifting towards business to customers (B2C). The cost of Internet technologies and databases is often high because of which the cost of inventory is increased (Gunasekaran, Marri, McGaughey, & Nebhwani, 2002). The new tools play a vital role in determining what steps Alex would have taken if they were taken into consideration after defining the goal of increasing net profits, return on investment, and the positive cash flow. Alex would have looked at the market conditions for ascertaining the demand for the product and subsequent estimation of orders (sales) at a given period of time. Based on this concept, the inventory costs would be calculated (Gunasekaran, Marri, McGaughey, & Nebhwani, 2002). Based on new tools systems of today, Alex would have a different goal overall. Based on the prior information about Alexââ¬â¢s goals on increasing profits, Alex would focus on the marketing of the company and providing high customer satisfaction. High customer satisfaction involves customization of the product. The Clientele approa ch would be taken into consideration at this point, i.e., having more clients to satisfy and relatively less orders to take. However, in case of Alex orders were high from one client with price remaining the same but the operations of business processes and costs were managed through altering manufacturing process. The marketing approach would lead to focusing on creating awareness of the service which the company has to offer and the cheapest form of marketing would be used that is the internet to save costs (Goldratt & Cox, 1992). In this book, it has been said that anything invested into the business including assets used in the system to make sales are considered as inventories of the business. In order to

Life Is a Journey Speech Essay Example for Free
Life Is a Journey Speech Essay Sometime you can just feel a personââ¬â¢s spirit around you. In many ways, we can see that the death of something does often leave some kind of impact, and as a result of this impact something about us inevitably changes. Iââ¬â¢m sure weââ¬â¢ve all had to deal with a close relative or a friend passing away, and itââ¬â¢s not the easiest thing, but thereââ¬â¢s so much to learn from it. Iââ¬â¢ve never really had a reason to until my good friend Dominique passed away earlier last year. Its nuts that one-day weââ¬â¢re all sitting together sharing a few laughs, and the next day a member of our group is no longer with us. Dominique was one of the smartest and most compassionate people I knew. Heââ¬â¢d always make sure others were comfortable and never put himself before others. And thatââ¬â¢s part of the reason why his death affected me so much; itââ¬â¢s saddening to know that a person that has done so much good can pass away at such a young age. Granted it is saddening, we can only learn from the good he has accomplished. It was hard seeing someone go that moved through life with you like water (simile). But I learned a lot from it. About embracing moments. About taking chances. About never giving up. About gratitude. About me (alliteration). Life is a journey (metaphor). And I never really understood what that meant until Dominique passed. As an active member of his community and a student at University of Maryland, Dominique always had something to offer to others. He always counted his blessings and paid it forward. Which continually blew my mind; why is someone so young worried about giving back to others when he has so much life left to live? Especially after Dominiqueââ¬â¢s death, Iââ¬â¢ve realized that we can go so unexpectedly. When most people hear this, they think of all of the things that they have not done yet, the places they want to go, the crazy stories they want to tell, but because of my friend Dominique, I am able to see there are far more important things to live your life by; like establishing good character, and having the ability to be selfless. Iââ¬â¢m not saying this is easy, but it is something I believe everyone should strive for in life. We all go through struggles on a daily basis but should we give up or continue to bite our teeth and fight on. Every setback happens for a reason, and this is the best time to learn from our mistakes, correct them, and hopefully not make the same mistakes in the future. Learn something new and strengthen yourself. My favorite quality of Dominiqueââ¬â¢s was that he never expected, demanded, or assumed anything. He always gave people the benefit of the doubt, did his best, and controlled the elements that he could control. Weââ¬â¢ve all heard the quote; ââ¬Å"Things that donââ¬â¢t kill you will only make you stronger.â⬠After every setback, bounce back and become stronger. He always fought like the courageous man he was (simile). We often donââ¬â¢t realize that our attitude determines our unhappiness or misery. He always taught me to become determined to stay positive. Circumstances will direct you, correct you, and perfect you over time; so whatever you do, hold on to hope. The last thing Dominique really opened my eyes to was that he was never afraid to get out of his comfort zone. He was never shy and always put himself out there. Sometimes, when you are too comfortable in your journey to success, you will not improve, and tend to become okay with where you stand. Dominique was a great example of someone who kept moving forward and wasnââ¬â¢t afraid of what he may run into. Weââ¬â¢ve all taken the first step of getting out our comfort zone by signing up for SP CM 212. But we must keep in mind that itââ¬â¢s a work in progress and that nothing comes easy. Dom always tried to persuade me into doing something I wouldnââ¬â¢t normally do and to give everything a chance. Thanks to him we were able to share a few memories by going on multiple trips together. By following the same old routine we begin to bore those around us and even ourselves. I guess I never really understood why it was such a big deal that every minute lost was never coming back to us. Your minutes are the only thing on this earth that thereââ¬â¢s a limited amount of. We tend to take death pretty hard and question why they had to go at such a young age. But maybe weââ¬â¢re doing it all wrong and should be remembering the great things that person accomplished and what they left us with. If youââ¬â¢re looking for a happy ending and canââ¬â¢t seem to find one, maybe itââ¬â¢s time to remember the great things. When I look back at my life I can see how perfect all has been for me to be right where I am today. And Iââ¬â¢m sure that goes to for many of us here. Life is a mystery unfolding every moment! (metaphor). Some of the strongest people out there are the ones who laugh the hardest with a genuine smile and have gone through the hardest of hardships.

Proteus Mirabilis Essay -- Biology Medican Medicine Essays
Proteus Mirabilis Life History: Proteus mirabilis is part of the normal flora of the human gastrointestinal tract. It can also be found free living in water and soil. When this organism, however, enters the urinary tract, wounds, or the lungs it can become pathogenic. Proteus mirabilis commonly causes urinary tract infections and the formation of stones. Microbiological Characteristics: Proteus mirabilis is part of the Enterobacteriaceae family. It is a small gram-negative bacillus and a facultative anaerobe. Proteus mirabilis is characterized by its swarming motility, its ability to ferment maltose, and its inability to ferment lactose. P. mirabilis has the ability to elongate itself and secrete a polysaccharide when in contact with solid surfaces, making it extremely motile on items such as medical equipment. Disease: The most common infection involving Proteus mirabilis occurs when the bacteria moves to the urethra and urinary bladder. Although Proteus mirabilis mostly known to cause urinary tract infections, the majority of urinary tract infections are due to E. coli. One-hundred thousand cfus per milliliter in the urine are usually indicative of a urinary tract infection. Urinary tract infections caused by P. mirabilis occur usually in patients under long-term catherization. The bacteria have been found to move and create encrustations on the urinary catheters. The encrustations cause the catheter to block. Symptoms for urethritis are mild including frequency of urination and pyuria (presence of white blob cells in the urine). Cystitis (bladder infection) symptoms are easier to distinguish and include back pain, concentrated appearance, urgency, hematuria (presence of red blood cells in the urine), a... ...d ciprofloxin. In cases with severe stone formation, surgery is necessary to remove the blockage. Proteus mirabilis is part of the normal flora of the gastrointestinal tract, and as a result the bacteria enters the urinary tract or infects medical equipment by the fecal route. Consequently, prevention includes good sanitation and hygiene, including proper sterilization of medical equipment. It is also suggested that patients not requiring catherization should not receive catherization, despite its convenience for the caretaker. Conflict and Negotiation Essay
Decision making is about coming to agreement on the perceptibly best (optimal) course of action, given several competing odds and scenarios. In many cases, there is more than one person involved in the decision making process. Given the realities faced by the various parties involved in deliberations that must lead to decisions, and the shades of information and viewpoints available to these parties, steps that lead to decisions must be clear on desired outcomes and accommodate different perspectives. Conflicts and the need to negotiate must arise sometimes become people are need-driven and see things from their own points of view ââ¬â for good reason. For instance, in my experience, I have encountered several instances where HR, business units and IT seemed to be working at cross-purposes even though they insist they are all focused on doing the best for the same organization: â⬠¢The HR manager was looking at employee time-tracking software from the standpoint of compliance and what needed to be in or out to protect the company from reputational risks such as litigations and regulatory penalties. The frontline business unit managerââ¬â¢s focus was on quick delivery so as to book the next sale and achieve his target profitability. â⬠¢The IT manager serving both the HR and business manager was looking at both groupââ¬â¢s needs from the standpoint of overall company priority since IT resources were limited. It thus becomes important for participants to be clear on the overall goal, even though they come from different points of view. There is always the need to do some give-and-take with regards to points of view, so the final decision has the coverage, goodwill and support it needs to serve the needs of all concerned and the organization as a whole. Conflict can be either functional (constructive) or of dysfunctional (destructive), depending on whether or not the negotiation process is focused clearly on solving problems or distracted by a selfish investment in rigid viewpoints. When conflicts are functional, they lead to creative tensions that challenge orthodoxy, lead to creative ideas and enhance organizational performance. When conflicts are dysfunctional, they result in narcissistic negotiations. Kofman, F (n. d) In this case, the potential advantage in group decision making of ââ¬Å"drawing from the experiences and perspectives of a larger number of individualsâ⬠is lost. Instead, individual/groups mistakenly view themselves as ââ¬Ëthe organization,â⬠thus fueling frustration and wasting the larger rganizationââ¬â¢s time and resources. Has anyone encountered individuals who are very self-centered in negotiations? Did you feel frustration and why? How did you get past the frustration point and get to some resolution? 1.
